Al Green - Let’s Stay Together
The beauty of this track isn’t even just how Rev. Al kills it. The instrumental is just so tight. That bass, those drums. We need organs in songs more often. So soulful don’t you agree?
Sharon Van Etten-Serpents
Here’s another song by a SVE, quite different from the one I posted earlier Love More. While that one was a slow acoustic meditation on a severely fractured relationship, this is all anger-and it’s better.
Even though the song is really well written, I think the reason this is so good is the band she’s got behind her. Twin guitars from the National’s Bryce And Aaron Dessner, and Matt Barrick, drummer from the Walkmen. That guy is a really valuable asset, he keeps everything going fast and angry with those little fills, yet keeps a perfect beat.
But in the end, it is still this girl that’s amazing.
The National - I Need My Girl
Yep. National videos all day.

Sophie B. Hawkins “Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover” (1991) is what I decided I wanted to hear instead when I tried listening to that new Lana Del Rey track.

Wolf Parade - I’ll Believe In Anything
If I could take the fire out from the wire
I’d share a life and you’d share a life
If I could take the fire out from the wire
I’d share a life and you’d share a life
If I could take the fire out from the wire
I’d take you where nobody knows you
And nobody gives a damn
I said nobody knows you
And nobody gives a damnI love this song. The energy is always infectious. No matter when I hear it, I can’t get enough. It’s always the right time for this one.
