The Power of First Experiences →
“Intense emotional sensations etch first experiences deeply into memory, creating what psychologists call “flashbulb memories.” Memories like our first kiss or tryst, our first glimpse of the ocean, our first day of school, or the birth of a first child engage all our senses simultaneously.

How To Communicate With Your Life: How to become... →
dinkenesh:
(via psychotherapy)
“If we want to be respected and not victimized, to be attractive rather than repulsive, we must believe with our lives we are those good things. “Fake it till you make it” may have some degree of utility in certain circumstances, but unless you actually “make it” your struggle will mostly remain convincing others of your qualities...

– MIT researcher David Dalrymple’s answer to the question, “How is the Internet changing the way you think?” (via chrbutler) (via slantback)
Timely article, as I’m preparing to interview candidates for an opening on my team. I’ve always favored critical thinking over rote memorization -...

Anthem-prone indie rock brooders the National are set to release their as-yet-untitled fifth record this May on 4AD. Little is known about the album at press time, but there’s already a big tour shaping up to support it. (Check out our interviews with Bryce Dessner and Aaron Dessner for a bit of insight into the making of the album.)
The Brooklyn band will show off some new...

"Down to earth"
Question for you smart people: what does this phrase really mean these days? I’ve heard this used as a compliment in a professional setting a number of times recently, primarily by 20-somethings. Based on context, it wasn’t an observation of someone’s “earthiness” (ie. slang for hippy), nor did it describe someone displaying common-sense or being practical. The...

The Human Spark →
“At Oxford University, Alan Alda finds out from Robin Dunbar how human social networks compare to those of chimps, and at Yale University, watches babies as young as three months old pick cooperative puppets over those that won’t play.”
I spent most of Sunday watching The Human Spark (in between football). The results of the experiments regarding social behavior and the abilities of...

I need to learn how to make friends.
dinkenesh:
I like to think I’m fairly amiable beneath the surface, but I have no idea how to give strangers that hint. That quote from Franny and Zooey about being tired of just liking people, and wanting to meet someone you can respect - that’s been in the back of my mind all week.
I’ve discovered that it’s harder to make real friends as you grow older. Maybe because these...

Alcohol's Neolithic Origins: Brewing Up a... →
hedonics:
ronmarks:
Did our Neolithic ancestors turn to agriculture so that they could be sure of a tipple? US Archaeologist Patrick McGovern thinks so. The expert on identifying traces of alcohol in prehistoric sites reckons the thirst for a brew was enough of an incentive to start growing crops.
Interesting. But I think the article downplays the evolutionary pressure here - alcohol was...

number one lesson of the past year
dinkenesh:
I hate change. I evolve at a glacial pace. I don’t like living where I don’t know the local haunts, I don’t like people that don’t completely understand me, and more than anything, I can’t imagine loving someone who’s not as perfect as everyone before them.
That last one is an incredibly profound observation.

Which are the "safest" cuisines? →
“James Hinckley asks:
Which cuisine are you most likely to be satisfied with when dining out? Which disappoints you the least # of visits? If you were at a shopping center you’ve never been to before and it has one restaurant of each cuisine and your goal was to simply be satisfied (you’re not looking to be blown away, you just don’t want a bad experience), which cuisine do...

Conan O’Brien Says He Won’t Host ‘Tonight Show’...
For those who have seen incompetence being rewarded and real talent getting screwed over:
“People of Earth:
In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky....
